Total nonsense

This past week, I was at a real estate conference. I do not go for the breakout sessions because they are mostly a waste of time. Well, they are definitely a waste of my time.

I am exaggerating - but not much.

As Morgan Housel relates, 

  • You can get rich lying to people who want to be lied to
  • You will go broke telling the truth to people who want to be lied to
  • You can do okay telling the truth to people who want to hear the truth

Human beings, and definitely many real estate agents, want to be lied to. PLEASE TELL ME THE MAGIC BULLET TO HAVE LOTS OF BUSINESS WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING HARD OR UNCOMFORTABLE!

On Thursday, I was suffering through a 90-minute session on video. There was no video content on the screen. Lots of talking “about” video. Lots of talking “about” surface-level concerns about being on video.

I don’t like being spoken to that way, and I am not a big fan of being called “friends”. This person was a capable keynote speaker, but this room of 200+ people was mainly not paying attention. 

The nail in the coffin for me was that the speaker went 10 minutes over. YOU HAD 90 MINUTES AND YOU WENT TEN MINUTES OVER? I lost my mind. You got PAID to speak, and you couldn’t hit your mark? Like, the session was not good, and you couldn’t even do the basics of finishing on time?

At any rate, most of the conference was about partying - I mean, networking. But for the handful of sessions that were available, mostly what I heard was total baloney. Nonsense. Surface-level conversations and topics that make NO DIFFERENCE.

Here’s how I know: If anything of significance were being said, then people could walk away with a tangible roadmap and actionable items that would dramatically improve their results.

No one - I mean maybe someone? - was walking away with a totally new view of how to be effective in their business.

So...what’s missing?

That’s the question. No kidding, here is the question:

What is missing right now in your business, the presence of which would dramatically transform your performance and results?

If you want to alter your results this year, it starts RIGHT NOW with being honest about what will make a difference. Wishing, hoping, and ignoring make NO DIFFERENCE.
