Selling out on your dreams

Nov 08, 2026

This is short and sweet - but get ready: it’s a gut punch.

One of my clients (let’s call her Abby) was telling me about an opportunity she is pursuing. If she takes it, it could take away from the big dream and ultimate goal we created for her business. (It’s her dream and goal, but we created it together less than a year ago.)

So Abby is telling me about this new opportunity. She is telling me she is going to do it, and do it at a fee less than she normally charges.

I said to her, “Go get your daughters. Look them straight in their eyes and say, ‘It’s okay to dream, sweetheart, but just know that when it gets hard, you’re going to sell out on your dreams...just like Mommy did.’”

Gut punch.

Abby moaned. The first few words out of her mouth were that this was not “fair,” and that I was being a little “mean.” But then she thought about it for a moment and knew it was the right feedback - that this could be ⁣the moment that alters next year, and the many years thereafter.

I asked her to rate her effort on her Big Goal. She said 50%. Right. Give up before you’ve really given it your all.

Abby is a phenomenal person and an equally amazing agent. She works her business. She is not afraid of hard things. But her goals are big, and they are going to take time. Not only will reaching her goals transform her life and that of her family, it’s the process of reaching them that will make the real difference.

This is not about Abby - or whatever her real name is.

This is about you. It’s November. The end of the year is upon us, and many of you have started thinking about next year. As you evaluate this year and plan what you will do next year, I strongly encourage you to consider the following question:

What have you given up on?

You’ve been in business for years - look back to the beginning, either when you got into real estate or some other time when you began creating what you really wanted to accomplish. Consider these additional questions:

  • What did you set out to do?

  • What have you given up on, and what are you still pursuing?

  • What would make a difference for you next year?

  • And lastly, are you going to do anything about it?

What did Abby do? We’ll see. This is not about Abby - this is about you.
