Mood Congruent Attentional Bias

being a professional Feb 08, 2025

“We are social animals to the core. Our survival and happiness depend on the bonds we form with others.”
- Robert Greene, The Laws of Human Nature

What is the one thing most real estate agents avoid doing every week? Being with others!

We go to the drive-thru for our coffee.
We go to the drive-thru for our fast food.
We even pick up our kids in the drive-thru!

Online is not a substitute for real-life interaction.

We don’t go to the office.
We don’t go to our sales meetings.
We do our CE classes on Zoom.

If you want more happiness and fulfillment, connect with more human beings.

Mood congruent attentional bias - how moods change perception. In The Upward Spiral, Alex Korb describes how when your mood gets worse, so does your brain’s negative bias. “Feeling down means you’re more likely to notice negative things about the world and about yourself.”

Almost every person I have coached in the last 8+ years reports back to me the following:
“Wow, talking to people was easier than I expected. I actually enjoyed it!”

Duh.

People are afraid to do it, but fulfilled when they do.

The more you avoid doing the things you know you need to do, the more your brain will focus on negative things: hopelessness, fear, scarcity, despair…

“We are social animals to the core…”

We get paid to be social! Not social media, SOCIAL! Connecting to our fellow human beings. What should I say? How should I act? Simple: as Stephen Covey said, “Give people psychological air” - make them feel understood, affirmed, validated, appreciated. It’s never about you - it’s about them.

The more we don’t interact with others, the more that muscle and skill atrophies. How you get better is by doing.

“Action cures fear.” - David Schwartz, The Magic of Thinking Big
